Kyle Burns' hobby of rewiring old cars has a lot in common with his weekday job as a service apprentice, but they're light years apart in terms of engineering advancement.
"My current project is rewiring a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air for a friend, and the old car couldn't be more different from the giant new 9RX Series tractors that come into the workshop at Emmetts Horsham," Kyle said.
The 2026 John Deere Service Apprentice of the Year has always been inclined to pull things apart to understand how they work, but he also recognises the importance of backing up that skill with qualifications.
Kyle spent 20 years installing auto electrics in new emergency service vehicles before a lifestyle change presented the opportunity to move to western Victoria and take on new challenges.
Initially employed as an agricultural electrical technician, Kyle decided to expand his skillset and commenced a dual trade in heavy diesel.
Emmetts Service Manager, Hannah Smart, said Kyle has demonstrated 'outstanding adaptability' in the role.
"Kyle quickly developed the skills to operate effectively in a busy workshop, and he was recently appointed Apprentice Workshop Lead for our five apprentices because he's a natural mentor," Hannah said.
"Despite having no agricultural background, Kyle's prior experience, combined with his professionalism and strong work ethic, has enabled him to transition smoothly into the agricultural industry."
In his role Kyle has been struck by the importance of supporting farmers, as he says without them, everything comes to a standstill. Being able to play a small part in helping farmers continue to operate gives him a strong sense of purpose and pride.
He's also passionate about promoting his industry as a potential career choice, by attending career days and speaking at local community events.
"As a mature-aged apprentice, I tell people that it's never too late to change careers. Many people feel they've missed their opportunity, but I'm living proof that this simply isn't true.
"My maturity and life experience allows me to connect with people from all backgrounds, and I enjoy the responsibility of promoting Emmetts, particularly the training department, as they have always strongly supported my own success and growth."
