Former dairy farmer now top apprentice
Daniel Barnes has worked on dairy farms around the world, including the Southern Hemisphere's biggest camel dairy and operations in England, Germany and New Zealand, but says being named the 2024 John Deere Service Apprentice of the Year is among his career highlights.
"Ever since I started using John Deere machinery during my time in Germany, I envisioned a career with the company," Daniel said.
"This is a huge honour and is a testament to the support network around me. My Service Manager, Jeff Stiller, has helped me out so much during my apprenticeship, and every day I'm learning from the customers, managers, other techs and apprentices.
"You're never alone in this job — there's always a path forward and someone to guide you."
Daniel's interest in diagnosing and repairing machines sparked a career change from farming, taking an opportunity at the RDO Equipment John Deere dealership in Beaudesert, where he is now in the third year of his apprenticeship.
The humble mature age apprentice said his primary focus each day is to support his customers and understand their business.
"I like getting to know the customers and what they're doing with their machinery and with their business, and then being able to diagnose and help solve their problems," Daniel said.
"It's very rewarding to see their machines get going again and to help them win.
"And for me personally, this is good as well, because it helps me grow as a technician and as a person, so I'm always thankful for the customers."
While he's looking forward to completing his apprenticeship, and becoming a fully qualified technician, Daniel is committed to continuing to learn, and said he had enjoyed the experience of the Technician of the Year Awards.
"It was a really awesome few days. I learned a heap of different things and met a lot of great people," he said.
"I know that it's going to get bigger each year and more people will get involved, and I'm very excited to see what the future brings."
Daniel encouraged others thinking of becoming a technician to "hook in" and give it a go, and to utilise John Deere's extensive learning platform and support system."
